Attic insulation in Sun Valley NV - an attic sealed first, then covered evenly

Rooms upstairs run hot and the power bill keeps climbing. We fix what's wrong in the attic first, then add insulation where it pays.

You meet the owner at the estimate

I'm usually the one who comes out to look at your attic and write the estimate. I'd rather tell you a job isn't worth doing than sell you insulation over a problem nobody looked for.

Running this company since 2023

I learned insulation on job sites beside experienced installers and started this company in 2023. Before that I ran another small business, so I know what it means to watch every dollar and keep a promise.

Licensed and fully insured, lead on site

The state contractors board licenses each contractor for set kinds of work, which is worth knowing when you compare bids. Our install crew works with a lead installer on site. Call (775) 447-1132 or use the form below.

Getting attic insulation right in Sun Valley

Attic insulation is the layer on your attic floor, right above your ceilings, that slows heat moving in or out of the rooms below. We seal the leaks in that floor first, then add insulation on top, for homes with a hot upstairs or a power bill that keeps climbing.

What moves the price is mostly how big the attic is, how much insulation is already up there and what has to be fixed before anything new goes in. Topping up a dry, sound layer costs much less than pulling out wet or matted insulation first. How you reach the attic matters too, because a tight hatch or a low roof slows the crew down.

The schedule turns on the same things, plus whether your address needs a permit. A straight top-up in a clean attic moves quickly, while removal or repairs have to come first. Older houses usually take more looking, since that's where we tend to find old wiring, buried vents and thin edges. After I look at your attic, you get your own figure in writing.

Attic insulation, sealing and the repairs that come first

Checking whether more will pay off

I start by checking how deep the old layer sits against the joists, the wood beams across the attic floor. If there's plenty up there, I'll tell you more won't pay off. If it will, the new layer should meet or beat what current building codes call for, and Washoe County, which covers Sun Valley, holds permit work to its latest codes, so ask me what level I'm planning. If the draft is coming from walls or floors instead, that's home insulation work.

Fixing the attic before it's covered

New insulation laid over a problem just hides it, so we deal with what's wrong first. That means wet insulation, moldy or rotted framing, vents blowing damp air into the attic, too little ventilation, and old fill full of droppings. Knob and tube wiring, an old type used in homes before 1930, can be a fire hazard where insulation touches it, so it has to be dealt with before anything goes in. The new layer then sits on a dry, sound floor.

Sealing gaps, then blowing in loose fill

We do the air sealing first, closing the gaps around pipes, can lights and the hatch where house air slips into the attic, so the new layer isn't fighting a draft. Baffles go in at the eaves to keep the vents open and the fill from spilling in. Then we lay blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, evenly, as deep at the edges as in the middle. Foam seals while it insulates but costs more, so I usually recommend sealing and loose fill unless your ductwork runs through the attic.

How an attic job goes with us

  1. Call or send us a note

Call (775) 447-1132 or use the form. It helps to have ready the home's age, how you get into the attic, and whether you see joists, vermiculite or recessed lights up there.

  2. I look at your attic

I come out, look at the space with you and tell you right there what I'd fix first and what can wait. A written estimate follows, and we check whether the county or a city covers your address.

  3. Crew installs, then we walk through

Once you say go, we set the date and take care of any permit. The county takes permits through its online platform, and its permit techs help weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The crew does the job, cleans up and walks through it with you.

Attic insulation questions from Sun Valley

How can I tell if my attic needs more insulation?

If you can easily see the floor joists, your insulation is level with them or lower, and you should add more. If it sits well above the joists, you probably have enough, and adding more may not be cost-effective. A flashlight from the hatch is usually enough to check.

Is blown-in insulation better than batts for an attic?

For most attics, yes. Blown loose fill, whether fiberglass, rock wool or cellulose, usually costs less than batts and covers better, because it settles around wires and framing that batts have to be cut to fit. When you compare bids, expect blown fill to come in lower for fuller coverage, though installation costs vary.

What does attic insulation cost in the Reno area?

Attic insulation in the Reno area usually costs about $1,500 to $4,900 per job. That's the area's going rate for the work, not our price. Your figure depends on your attic, so I'll look at it with you and put my estimate in writing.

What should I do if my attic has vermiculite insulation?

Leave it alone. The EPA says to assume vermiculite may contain asbestos and recommends not disturbing it. If you choose removal, the EPA says to hire a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor separate from whoever assessed it, so if we're the ones who look at it, the removal goes to a different company.
